This site will be a place where I will post on a regular basis the progress of my final project at the Danish Designschool.
The project is a remake of once popular Icelandic folk tales and legends. When I was a kid I read them back and forth. They really opened up my imagination, sometimes resulting in sleepless nights - the ghost stories are quite terrifying!
The collection is made up of 9 books; Ghost, Troll, Hidden people, Fairy tales (2 books), Followings, Magic, Outlaws and Nature stories.
They have been published a few times in different collections first in 1862, a collection made by Jón Árnason and Magnús Grímsson. The collection in quite huge, and I found a republished version here in the Royal Danish Library from the year 1954. But the collection I'm going to work with is the one I had as a child and it was published in 1970-5 and is a sort of "best of".
The purpose of the project is to reintroduce these stories to younger generations that have never read them and then also encouraging them to read more...a big problem in the western world and specially in Iceland where reading skills are becoming worse and worse.
I will try and make a fun and interactive/playful version of the collection.
I hope you follow the process and maybe throw in a comment if you feel you have an opinion on something :)
Best wishes
Kári
